Her Majesty Queen Sonja in Cape Town

Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway has spoken of the importance Norwegians attach to the role Norway was honoured to play in the struggle against apartheid.

Queen Sonja was speaking at the launch on 10 February in Cape Town of Norway’s 2005   programme in South Africa, a year-long calendar of events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the peaceful dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden.

South Africa is one of only eleven focus countries to be honoured by Norway as centennial partners in 2005.

The relationship between Norway and South Africa will be celebrated with events in business, sport, opera, music, tourism and cuisine and as well as exhibitions, a peace seminar and events for children and young adults.

The 2005 programme focuses on Norway as a partner in peace and development, a nation rich in resources and a modern, culturally diversified and innovative knowledge-based society.

Queen Sonja visited Antarctica on 12 February with Ministers and representatives from Norway, Sweden and South Africa to open Norway’s new year-round research station at Troll. She also visited South Africa’s scientific station SANAE IV
