Culture

Cultural ties with other countries are important for Norwegian and South African cultural policy and for the development of our multi-cultural society. Cultural encounters can counteract stereotyped images of other cultures, prevent the development of prejudice and xenophobia, and foster awareness and knowledge. Culture is an essential part of the cooperation between Norway and South Africa. Music is at the core, and South African and Norwegain artists have a lot to offer each other. This has perhaps been especially evident within the field of jazz.

In the cultural area, South Africa and Norway have focused on music as the main area of formalised co-operation. The programme is called Mmino, and runs through 2010. The Norwegian support to the programme is a total amount of up to 12 mill NOK over 3 years. The National Arts Council of South Africa is contributing to the program with a total of 3 mill ZAR within the same timeframe. Read more
