Culture

In the cultural area, South Africa and Norway have focused on music as the main area of formalised co-operation. The programme is called Mmino, and runs through 2010. The Norwegian support to the programme is a total amount of up to 12 mill NOK over 3 years. The National Arts Council of South Africa is contributing to the program with a total of 3 mill ZAR within the same timeframe.

Norway and South Africa have since 2000 cooperated to promote mutual learning and exchange between musical performers and institutions in the two countries. The programme is called Mmino – The South African-Norwegian Education and Music Programme – and is implemented in partnership with Rikskonsertene in Oslo. The support is channelled through the National Arts Council of South Africa.

Goals and components

The objective is to support music and music education and promote co-operation in music between South Africa and Norway. The programme also aims to target disadvantaged and marginalised groups and to stimulate capacity-building through institutional co-operation and exchange programmes in the music sector.

The major programme areas are music education and exchange between Norway and South Africa or within the SADC region. Project funds are made available to applicants twice a year.
