Human Rights and Peace and Security

South Africa and Norway have a long history on cooperation within the fields of Human Rights and Peace and Security both in South Africa and in the region. The governments of South Africa and Norway held their first annual bilateral Human Rights talks in April 2010, and will continue the work towards establishing common ground and areas of cooperation both bilaterally and internationally.



 

Tri-party cooperation in the area of Peace and Security in Africa has a high priority, and there is increased emphasis on gender-based violence and strengthening the role of women in governance and post-conflict reconstruction.



 

Efficient and transparent management of National Resources is vital for Africa. Norway in cooperation with organisations and government institutions in the region supports activities to strengthen governance and fair distribution of income from natural resources.

 

In cooperation with the Southern African Liaison Office (SALO), the Embassy supports a Policy Dialogue Program focusing on Zimbabwe. In 2005, the Embassy of Norway in Pretoria entered into an agreement with the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights in Oslo on management of the South Africa Human Rights Programme. In total NOK 65 million has been allocated to the program by the end of 2009.  Read more
