Climate change and environment

Norway has had a long cooperation with South Africa in the areas of environmental protection and energy. As our existing cooperation programs with both the Department of Environment (DEA) and Department of Energy (DOA) end in 2010, discussions are ongoing on how to build on the strong relationships that have been established. Both the Environmental Cooperation Program and the Energy Cooperation Program have involved close cooperation between institutions in Norway and South Africa.  

 

Based on the Joint Declaration signed between South Africa and Norway during the visit of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg in 2008, a close cooperation on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has been started. Norway supports phase II of a regional energy project that is launched by the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business. The project will contribute to improved performance of electricity utilities, increased investment, widened access and reliable and competitively priced electricity services. Read more

The cooperation between Norway and South Africa has been ongoing for the last 15 years, but will be concluded as bilateral cooperation in 2010. Read more

Norway and South Africa has been cooperating in the environment field since 1996. The current Environmental Co-operation Programme between South Africa and Norway will be concluded in 2010, and the annual Norwegian contribution is approximately 10 million Norwegian kroner. Read more

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg   received a cheque of R2.2m from the Ambassadors of Norway and Denmark, and the World Conservation Union, towards the purchase of 2010 trees, for the Greening Soweto Legacy Project. Read more
