Strengthening the Governance of Africa’s Natural Resources

Agreement and Implementing Partner: South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA).

 

Agreement period:  2007-2010

Total amount:  NOK 11 mill.

Objective: Make a significant and meaningful input into the improvement of policy governing the exploitation and extraction of Africa’s natural resources by assessing existing governance regimes and providing policy alternatives to targeted stakeholders. A new agreement for the period 2010-13 is under negotiation.

 

Combating desertification

Implementing Agency/Partner: Desert Research Foundation Namibia (DRFN)

Project duration: 2005-2009

Total amount allocated: NOK 10 mio.

Project description: The objective is to enhance the management of water and other terrestrial natural resources in selected pilot ephemeral river basins of the SADC region in a sustainable, equitable and improved manner. This shall contribute to improved livelihoods of people dependent upon natural resources in the ephemeral rivers. The project has been extended to 2010, and the final outcome and reports will be available in October 2010.

 

Southern Africa Sustainable Use Specialist Group (SASUSG)

Implementing Agency: Southern Africa Sustainable Use Specialist Group (SASUSG)

Partner: The World Conservation Union/The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)

Project duration: 2005-2007

Total amount allocated: NOK 7 mio.

Project description: The objective is to develop, test, document and disseminate the principles and practices of democratic, devolved sustainable use, and promote their adoption through regional collaboration.
