Norway’s new honorary General Consulate in Madagascar’s capital Antananarivo was officially opened on Monday April 30th. The Consul General is Arild M. Bakke, general representative for The Norwegian Mission Society (NMS) in Madagascar.

Today one hundred years have passed since Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his expedition became the first to reach the South Pole. In a speech at the South Pole Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg today honoured Amundsen and his men. He also paid tribute to the bravery of British explorer Robert F. Scott and his expedition.

The Norwegian oil industry has not been nationalized. Instead the Government has imposed heavy taxes on the companies operating on the shelf. The income is put into the so called Government Pension Fund worth 4450 billion ZAR. The Fund has invested close to 12 billion ZAR in 57 South African companies (31th December 2011).
