Personal ID-number - necessary when applying for a passport

If you have ever been domiciled in Norway since 1964, you hold a personal number. If you were born abroad or have never been a resident in Norway since 1964, the embassy must apply for you to obtain a personal number. This must also be done for children born abroad.

23/02/2007 :: The personal number must be obtained before a passport can be applied for. An enquiry of a personal number has to be directed to the embassy in Pretoria, which will submit an application to the Personregisteret in Norway. The following documentation is required:

  • The certificate of birth has to be authenticated by apostille by authorities in your respective country. The relevant authorities for every country are listed here.
  • A certified copy of the Norwegian parent(s) passport(s) have to be included as well. The embassy can authentificate the copy.

The procedure may take 4-6 weeks, as the application will be forwarded to the Personregisteret in Norway. The response will then be given to the embassy.

The personal number can only be requested when needed for the application for a Norwegian passport.
