Change of name

Name(s) stated in passport application must be identical to what is registered in the Norwegian Public Register (‘folkeregisteret’).

11/04/2007 :: If the above is not correct, the passport application will not be accepted and consequently returned.

Notification for change of name for Norwegians registered as living abroad must be sent in the form of a letter to:

The letter of notification regarding change of name from Norwegians domiciled abroad, must include the following information and documentation:

  1. Your current address
  2. Your date of birth with personal ID-number (without this number your notification will not be accepted)
  3. Your old name in full
  4. Your new name in full (underline your surname)
  5. Name what kind of documentation you have enclosed with the notification (Population register transcript, confirmation of change of name issued by the Ministry of the Interior, with a Norwegian translation.  The Embassy can help with such a translation)

Certified true copies of relevant documentation - as stated in number 5, must be enclosed with the notification.

The processing of name change will normally take about 10 days - excluding postal time to and from Norway.

Norwegians registered as living in Norway,  must send notification of name change to relevant Public Register.  Forms for such a notification may be obtained through the local Public Register or may be downloaded from internet.  See link on the right hand side.
