Application Procedures

Here you will find information and requirements of how to apply for a visa and other permits to Norway including work and study permits, family reunification and more

NB: please note that visa and passport enquiries via telephone will be answered between 1400 and 1600h.

Processing Period = Strictly minimum of  7-14 working days after the  complete  application is received by the Embassy in Pretoria for South Africans.

For Non South Africans the processing period  will be strictly  ± 4 months as  applications have to be send to UDI in Oslo for approval.

The holders of Diplomatic and Official passports do not need a Visa to Norway , however the applicants will have to  check if they need transit visas to and from other Schengen Countries.

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) has issued a set of fact sheets that will help you out.They are published in several languages and cover the following areas:

Visa - gives the holder permission to travel to Norway and the Schengen area for up to three months.  Application Form

Work Permit – entitles the holder to work in Norway. Different rules apply to nationals of different countries and to with people with different occupations - Read more and application form

Asylum – a person may have a right to asylum in Norway if he or she has a well-founded fear of persecution in his or her country of origin - Read more and application form 

Settlement Permit – entitles the holder to live and work in Norway permanently - Read more and application form

Family Reunification - means that a family member living abroad is allowed to come to Norway to live with one or more family members who already live here or intend to live here permanently  - Read more and application form

Citizenship- affiliation with a state with rights and responsibilities vis-à-vis that state - Read more and application form

Residence Permits for Students– a foreign national who wishes to study in Norway may be granted a residence permit for this purpose - Read more and application form
